Why is Reading Books so Great?

If you are unsure about buying a book for your loved ones, I can tell you that books are priceless treasures and the perfect gift. Reading is a beneficial activity. Studies have determined that you should devote at least 30 minutes daily to it. Even 15 minutes with a book will support your brain health for a lifetime.

You'll always want them by your side when you hear how many health benefits books bring. In today's age of social networks and other digital content, people no longer read books but somewhat digital news and various content on their social networks. Times have changed drastically, and picking up a book seems no longer popular.

It's not good news; unfortunately, books appear less and less in our hands. The statistics show that many people have not read books for long. According to a survey in the United States, the share of Americans who had read more than 12 books in the last three months stood at five percent in February 2024. However, 28.5 percent had not read any books in the three months running up to the survey. (Source of statistics: Statista)

The Health Benefits of Reading

  • Reading wakes the brain by stimulating neurological areas that make you feel like you're experiencing it yourself.

  • Reading can reduce stress. A 2009 study by Mindlabs International at the University of Sussex showed that reading reduces stress by almost 68 percent and is more effective than listening to music or walking. Just six minutes of reading daily is enough to relax and forget all daily worries.

  • Reading books relieves symptoms of depression. Research by the University of Liverpool's Centre for Research into Reading, Literature, and Society has found that people who read are more likely to be satisfied with their lives.

  • Research by the National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information shows that people who read before bed generally sleep better and wake up less often. This does not apply to e-reading. Electronic devices emit blue light, which is not good, so traditional books are a better choice for reading before bed.

  • Reading boosts memory by allowing us to absorb information about new characters, their personalities, and ambitions. The brain stores this knowledge, strengthening the synapses that enhance our short-term memory. Researchers at the Beckman Institute found that regular, engaged leisure reading can strengthen memory skills in older adults, laying the groundwork for better practices in preserving our mental abilities as we age.
