Why is Reading Books so Great?

If you are unsure about buying a book for your loved ones, I can tell you that books are priceless treasures and the perfect gift.

It is common knowledge that reading is an extremely useful activity.

Studies have defined that about 30 minutes is the minimum you should devote to reading every day. Even 15 minutes with a book will support your brain health for a lifetime.

When you hear how many health benefits they bring, you'll want to always have them by your side. In today's age of social networks and other digital content, people no longer read books but rather digital news and various content on their social networks. Times have changed drastically and it seems that it is no longer popular to pick up a book.

This is not good news and, unfortunately, the book appears less and less in our hands.

The statistics show that a large percentage of people have not read any book for a long time. According to the results of a survey held in the United States, the share of Americans who had read more than 12 books in the last three months stood at five percent in February 2024. However, 28.5 percent had not read any books in the three months running up to the survey. (Source of statistics: Statista)

The Reading Brain

The Health Benefits of Reading

  • Reading wakes up the brain by stimulating neurological areas in the brain that make you feel like you're experiencing it yourself.

  • Reading can reduce stress. A 2009 study by Mindlabs International at the University of Sussex showed that reading reduces stress by almost 68 percent and that it is more effective than listening to music or walking. Just six minutes of reading a day is enough to relax and forget about all daily worries.

  • Reading books relieves symptoms of depression. Research by the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Research into Reading, Literature, and Society has found that people who read are more likely to be satisfied with their lives.

  • Research by the National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information shows that people who read before bed generally sleep better and wake up less often. This does not apply to e-reading. Electronic devices emit blue light which is not good, so for now, traditional books are a better choice for reading before going to bed.

  • Reading improves memory, so while reading a book we learn a lot of information, and we get to know a lot of new characters, their personalities or ambitions. The brain collects and stores all this information and every new knowledge that the brain stores in its memory strengthens the brain's synapses. This is fascinating because it directly affects the strengthening of our memory, especially short-term memory.

Researchers at the Beckman Institute found that regular, engaged leisure reading can strengthen memory skills in older adults, laying the groundwork for better practices in preserving our mental abilities as we age.
